University Printing Policies: GWPrints

What is GWPrints?
GWPrints refers to a collaborative effort to make the transition to the new campus-wide printing policy as easy as possible. Through GWPrints hard work a unified printing system has been installed at the main printing locations on campus: The Academic Technologies labs, Gelman Library, Burns Law Library, and Himmelfarb Medical Library.

The printing system is comprised of 4 simple components:

1. A public access Library or Lab computer
2. Temporary electronic storage of print jobs
3. Print Release Stations
4. Printers (The number of release stations and printers will vary between locations.)

How will I benefit from this system?
There are two primary benefits to be achieved through the new University Printing Policy:

• Reduced Waste – Each day, thousands of sheets of paper are printed on the GW Campus. All returning students will recognize that a large percentage of these end up in the recycling bin. This waste of paper and toner negatively impacts the environment.

• Improved Services - The cost of providing printing services has been rising each year as has the number of individuals utilizing those services. These two factors have seriously strained the budgets of departments offering student printing as a service. Through cost recovery, our computing departments can better upgrade and maintain the high-quality computing services currently enjoyed by GW’s students and faculty.

What are the charges for printing?

University Policy states that each print job is charged a flat fee of $0.09 per printed side.

For example, a two page document, either printed on both sides of one sheet or on one side of two sheets, will cost $0.18.

The cost of your print job will be debited from your GWorld Colonial Cash™ or GWorld Debit Dollars™ account. This fee is subject to change and the management and administration of George Washington University may alter printing policies at any time.

When will these charges begin?
Burns Law Library currently charges for printing. The Academic Technologies Labs begin charging on Monday August 19th, 2002. Gelman and Himmelfarb Libraries will begin charging for printing on Sept. 3rd, 2002.

How does the new printing system work?
Using the new print system is easy. Simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Select the print command in the application that you are using.

Step 2: Depending on your location, you will either be prompted to name your print job, or your print job will be automatically linked to your user account.

Step 3: Your print job will be electronically stored on the Print Release Station.

Step 4: At the Print Release Station, select only those jobs you want printed.

How do I know the cost of each print job?
There are two ways to determine the cost of a print job.

• Print Preview – You may want to use the “Print Preview” option available on most programs. “Print Preview” will allow you to view document formatting, provide you with a page count, and will allow you to define which pages you would like to print.

• Print Release Station – Use the mouse to select your print job from the displayed list. The number of sheets and cost of the job will be displayed in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Each printed side is termed a “sheet” on the Print Release Station. Click “Print” to release (print) the selected job.

What are the other policies?

Each computer department offering user printing as a core service, maintains it’s own support procedures.
